Last Sunday, Facebook announced their plan to hire 10,000 highly skilled employees from countries within the EU to construct the digital world known as the metaverse. It's noted that the social media company is focusing on recruitment in countries such as Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Poland, the Netherlands, and Ireland.According to Nick Clegg, Facebook's Head of Global Affairs, stated in a post that: “Europe is an extremely important market for Facebook.”From thousands of employees in the EU to millions of businesses using our applications and tools every day, the EU has become an integral part of our success,' said Javier Olivan. 'As we aim to bring the metaverse into life, the need for highly skilled engineers is one of our top priorities at Facebook. Therefore, we look forward to collaborating with governments across the EU to find the right people and markets to make this happen, in the upcoming large-scale recruitment drive.
Metaverse is a term used to describe a digital world where users can interact in a 3D environment. Metaverse is a trend that many companies like Microsoft, Roblox, and Epic Games are investing in. In April 2021, Epic Games received a $1 billion investment, with Sony contributing $200 million to build the metaverse.
However, this announcement comes at a chaotic time for Facebook. The media company is under scrutiny following a series of investigations by The Wall Street Journal into negative impacts and implicit rules. Moreover, earlier this month, former Facebook employee Frances Haugen exposed the company, even testifying before the US Congress. Subsequently, Sophie Zhang testified before the UK Parliament earlier this month. As reported by CNBCFor more news about Facebook, check out:
