After pausing proposals for groups related to political and civil movements in the United States, Facebook is extending the enforcement of these policies to other countries. Additionally, the operation of these policies is becoming more diverse for groups violating Facebook's rules.
Initially, the company will reduce the presence of groups in search and limit their content in the news feed. Eventually, groups may face complete removal, and intermediate warning steps may be skipped if a group is deemed to be causing significant harm.
Additionally, Facebook will downgrade groups violating its rules in multiple ways. When users try to join a group, Facebook will warn them that the mentioned group allows posts violating community standards, and invitations to join those groups will also be restricted. For users already members of the mentioned groups, content from the groups will also be deprioritized to reduce their appearance in the user's News Feed.
Above all, if a group is found to violate many of Facebook's policies, administrators and moderators will have to manually approve all posts, at least temporarily.
Taking a more stringent approach, Facebook is also imposing restrictions on members violating multiple times in groups. Users will temporarily be restricted from posting or commenting in any group, even if they haven't violated policies in all those groups, and they will also be unable to invite others to groups or create new groups.
All these measures can greatly contribute to slowing down the spread of misleading and harmful content, and Facebook states that they are consistently striving to improve their platform.
