Immediately after the news of Microsoft withdrawing its Cloud Gaming service from iOS due to Apple's App Store policies, Facebook also criticized the Cupertino giant for their gaming-related policies. The social media company has released Facebook Gaming on iOS but without any games whatsoever in the app as opposed to what's available on Android.
Install the latest version of Facebook Gaming:
Facebook Gaming not only allows users to watch game streams but also enables them to play games from the Android app. However, the gaming feature will be absent in the iOS version due to Apple's App Store policies limiting apps that stream or run games without specific review by Apple, except when they run within Safari and use WebKit features.
In a statement to The Verge, Sheryl Sandberg - Facebook's Chief Operating Officer, said the company had to completely remove the gaming feature for the Facebook Gaming app to be approved for the App Store. Additionally, iPhone company seems to have rejected the gaming app multiple times over the past few months, deeming its purpose as gaming. Facebook is believed to have shared usage data from its Android app to prove that 95% of activities in this service are streaming, but those efforts have been futile.
Apple has been heavily criticized for their App Store policies, which have also led to multiple antitrust investigations. Reports suggest the company also favors certain partners when it comes to policies, further increasing criticism. Considering the company doesn't enforce similar scrutiny with other content, such as music or TV programs, the rejection of games seems peculiar and negatively impacts customers. It will be interesting to see if the company changes its stance due to pressure from partners.
