Meta will retire Messenger Lite in September, but previous conversations will remain intact.
About 7 years ago, Messenger Lite emerged as a savior for devices with limited specs or low memory. However, the app was unexpectedly removed from the App Store in 2020. It appears a similar situation is unfolding with the Google Play Store.

Currently, users can hardly find Messenger Lite on the Play Store. Devices with this app installed will receive a notification: 'Messenger Lite will no longer be available after September 18. Previous conversations will be preserved in the Messenger app.'

Features like viewing Stories, animated stickers, dark mode, or chat themes are all stripped away from Messenger Lite. This helps reduce the app's size, saving a lot of memory for users.

Meta's decision to retire Messenger Lite and focus on the Messenger app has left some users worried that their devices will consume more battery. Others find it quite inconvenient as their needs are limited to sending and receiving simple messages. Another feature being removed is support for SMS messaging, which isn't very popular with users. Additionally, the company hopes users will enjoy end-to-end encrypted messaging on Messenger. This technology is still being tested and developed by Meta.
