The social network introduces a series of new blogs called Hard Questions to unveil private messages of deceased users.
Monika Bickert, Facebook's Global Policy Director, states that this initiative not only aims to safeguard sensitive information but also respects the wishes of users after their passing. By default, user accounts are memorialized after death, but anyone can choose an inheritor for their Facebook account in case of death. Nonetheless, Facebook is committed to protecting user data after death.
Facebook's commitment to safeguarding user data posthumously
Upon memorialization, Facebook adds the term 'Remembering...' to notify other users that the account is no longer active. Settings remain unchanged, as explained by Facebook: 'We do not remove or make any changes. This is how we honor the choices someone made while they were alive.'
Users also have the option to delete their account upon death. However, the Legacy Contact option allows loved ones to download posts and photos, add information to the deceased's profile, and ultimately delete the account if desired.
Protecting user information posthumously is also part of Facebook's security policy; they will not hand over the private messages of deceased users to any other users.
Facebook also states they are continuously exploring and finding the best solutions to protect privacy and information for users after they pass away. Their policies may evolve over time. Establishing privacy rights is crucial in today's landscape; Facebook, as a social network, presents a lucrative target for hackers to exploit and steal user information.
