After reports surfaced last week about Facebook introducing a dedicated gaming app, the company has nearly delivered on that promise. At this moment, Facebook has introduced a collection of 'Cloud-streamed' games that can be played through the Facebook app for Android or on a computer via a modern web browser. Like traditional cloud-based gaming services, these games will be available to play immediately without the need for separate downloads and installations. However, while this project may seem like a cloud gaming service, Facebook asserts that it is not a standalone or subsidiary product:
'First, I want to clarify what we are not doing: we are not creating a standalone cloud gaming service. All cloud-streamed games can be played just like how you play games on Facebook today - whether that's in our Gaming tab or from the News Feed. No special hardware or controllers are needed - your hands are the controllers as we are launching native mobile games'.
Access Facebook Gaming on the web, as well as download the app for Android and iOS devices:
The service will debut in beta on Android and Web. The initial gaming roster includes renowned titles like Asphalt 9: Legends, Mobile Legends: Adventure by Moonton, PGA TOUR Golf Shootout, Solitaire: Arthur's Tale, and WWE SuperCard. Facebook pledges to introduce Dirt Bike Unchained at some point in the future, along with various other games. Cross-play between titles with integrated Facebook login options and the downloaded version of the same game will also be supported.
For the first time, you can personalize your avatar and player name, elements that will be visible as you engage in these gaming experiences. This means custom player names and avatars will represent you, replacing your profile picture and full name. Facebook is also introducing Cloud Playable Ads on Android and iOS in the US, currently supporting interactive demo versions derived from the game's original code. Some changes to the Gaming tab have also been implemented to enhance user interaction.
These cloud-based platform games will run in parallel with regular HTML5 games that attract over 380 million players each month on the current website. This is believed to be a seamless transition between the two formats. However, it's worth noting that these apps may run on Android devices, but Apple devices running iOS and iPadOS are not supported due to specific issues with the App Store policies.
Regarding this, Facebook Play's Vice President, Jason Rubin, stated: 'We currently don't support iOS, which is a significant challenge for us. We are prohibited from launching Facebook from the browser and playing games. Apple treats games differently and continues to control a valuable resource'.
