Facebook states that the new icon represents the 'continual evolution' of Messenger and indeed it has become more than just a messaging platform. Over the past few months, the company has added new features, such as improvements to video calls (including Messenger Rooms) or the ability to watch videos together on the app, all highlighted in the latest announcement.
Recently, Facebook has also begun integrating its messaging platforms, allowing cross-messaging between Instagram and Messenger. This feature is almost fully rolled out in North America, which may be why the new Messenger icon draws inspiration from Instagram's icon.
Alongside the new icon, the app also introduces several useful ways for users to customize the app interface, with new themes like love and tie-dye, as well as custom reactions for messages. Many more features will soon be added, such as selfie stickers and disappearing message mode.
Facebook does not explicitly state whether the update is rolled out to everyone immediately or only to specific user groups. On test devices running Android 10, the update seems to be unavailable, but it's likely to be deployed more widely in the coming days.
