In December of the past year, Facebook introduced a novel tool allowing users to transfer their Facebook photos and videos to Google Photos. This feature first appeared in Latin America and the Asia-Pacific region in February, followed by regions in the UK, the US, and Canada. The company has now globally rolled out this feature for all Facebook users.
Discover the latest version of the app on your phone:
To unlock this feature, navigate to Facebook settings and find Your Facebook Information. Select Transfer a Copy of Your Photos or Videos from the options.
Facebook will prompt you to confirm your identity with a password. Enter your password and choose Google Photos as your destination. Press Confirm Transfer. Once validated via your Google account, the transfer process for photos and videos will commence. Facebook will notify you through an in-app message and an email upon completion.
The photo transfer tool in Facebook is part of the open-source Data Transfer Project, established in 2018. Current contributors to the project include Apple, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, and Twitter.
As mentioned on the official website, the Data Transfer Project (DTP) is a collaborative effort among various organizations to establish an open-source framework connecting any two online service providers. This framework enables users to seamlessly and directly transfer their data.
Currently, Google Photos is the sole destination for transferring media from your Facebook account. However, the company plans to integrate this feature with more partners in the future. According to a spokesperson from Facebook quoted by The Verge, the transfer infrastructure will be activated across all companies within the Data Transfer Project.
