This social media platform introduces a fresh set of blogs named Hard Questions to reveal the personal messages of users who have passed away.
Monika Bickert, the Global Policy Director of Facebook, reveals that this initiative aims not only to protect sensitive information but also to honor the posthumous desires of users. After users pass away, their accounts will be memorialized by default. However, anyone can select an inheritor for their Facebook account in the case of their demise. Nevertheless, Facebook commits to safeguarding user information after they pass away.
Facebook pledges to safeguard user information after they pass away
When an account is memorialized, Facebook adds the term 'Remembering...' to let other users know that the account is no longer active. The settings remain unchanged, as Facebook explains: “We do not remove or make any changes. This is how we show respect for the choices someone made while they were still alive.'
Users can also choose to delete their account upon death. However, the Legacy Contact option allows loved ones to download posts and photos, add information to the profile of the deceased, and ultimately delete their account if desired.
Protecting user information when they pass away is also part of Facebook's privacy policy; they will not hand over the personal messages of the deceased users to any other users.
Facebook also states that they are continuously exploring and finding the best solutions to protect privacy and information for users after they pass away. Their policies may evolve over time. Establishing privacy rights is crucial in today's landscape, as the Facebook social network becomes a tempting target for hackers to exploit and steal user information.
