6. Be Proactive in Facing Failure
7. Failure is Just a Bamboo Fence, Not a Concrete Wall
8. In the End, Failure Still Essential for Success
This is certainly a very apt proverb. I'm not sure if its origin is from Vietnam or China. Because they also have a similar saying:
'Failure is the Mother of Success. – Shī bài shì chéng gōng zhī mǔ.'
In the Western world, there's a similar saying: “Failure is not the opposite of success. It's a part of success.”
Therefore, with the statement 'failure is the mother of success,' you can see its high level of truthfulness. Because many cultures and philosophies draw similar conclusions.
However, this article will dissect this statement from various perspectives. From the meaning of failure as the mother of success, lessons learned, to different angles on this saying. Let's continue exploring the content below.
What does 'Failure is the Mother of Success' Mean?
Initially, success and failure may seem unrelated, even deeply opposed. But no, they are intricately connected. Hence the saying 'failure is the mother of success.'
Failure is when we stumble, when our endeavors don't go smoothly. Everything in life doesn't go the way we want.
Success, on the other hand, is the opposite. Success means achieving the goals we set out for, everything goes smoothly, just as we desire.
Why is Failure the Mother of Success?
Just like how without a parent, we wouldn't exist. Similarly, success is hard to come by without accumulating previous failures.
For example, before venturing into book business as it is today. Previously, I have ventured into clothing, personal care products, dietary supplements, and various other odds and ends, not to mention.
Guess what, if successful, would I have abandoned those areas and focused on book business?
That's FAILURE for you. But failure often comes with defeat. It's embarrassing, who wants to talk about it?
'Failure is the mother of success' implies that we should not be discouraged by failure. Instead, persisting through failure will teach us how to succeed.
You see, failure and success are closely related. After each failure, we identify the mistakes that led to it. Then we extract valuable lessons. Then we avoid repeating past mistakes, and gradually move closer to the goals we've set.
Lessons from Failure and Success?
'Do what you love. It won't make you successful. But it will help you endure longer than doing something you find ordinary or dislike,' I said.
My younger sister nodded, but perhaps with some reservations. And so she went from learning this to trying her hand at that.
Learning makeup -> FAIL. She wasn't as adept as those on YouTube.
Cosmetics business -> Entered the market too late, saturated.
Regional food business -> Food often spoiled during transport, profits were meager.
She was disappointed because she felt stuck in life. Everything she tried failed.
But she's also happy now because she's running a women's gym business. Despite the tough times of the pandemic, she persists. That's a significant signal, as perhaps she's understood what I've been advising.
'At first, it's enthusiasm to help you go the distance. But then you'll understand that business is just business. They're all the same. Failure is the mother of success.'
Do you dare to stand up after stumbling?
Those who rise in life and overcome difficulties will deeply appreciate their achievements. The more failures you have, the more valuable experience you'll gain to avoid falling into the same traps. Thus, not letting yourself be tempted, stumble.
When facing failure, don't lose heart. When you're willing to invest your time and effort, success will come to you.
Persist till the end. Like the friend above, she's quite clever and skilled, just lost her way. Many others, on the contrary, go the right way but lack skills and experience. They also refuse to learn, to embrace new things. Resulting in failure in everything they do.
To succeed, you must persevere, that's a prerequisite. Along that path, you'll encounter failures. But understand, failure will be a hurdle to help you succeed. It's not a bad thing as schools teach.
Alright, now listen to my opposing viewpoint on this topic.
Is Failure the Mother of Success?
I don't entirely agree. Or put it another way, this statement is partly true but needs supplementation.
If you observe, most people around you are in business. However, the majority fail. That's why parents want you to have a stable job.
Many people always hold the belief that 'The more failures, the better. Because as the ancients said, failure is the mother of success.'
So they're not afraid of failure. Not only that, the more they fail, the more enthusiastic and passionate they become.
These individuals may succeed, may achieve what they want or not. The thing is, they don't realize what they're wasting the most, which is TIME.
Let me reveal to you a formula. It's the formula for accumulating experience.
Experience = Failure + Learning + Application
No one succeeds on their first try. Meanwhile, if you only have failure + application without remembering to learn, then success will certainly be something elusive for you.
Learn from failure. Learn from successful people to shorten the time. Extract the mistakes you encounter during application. Below are the points I've distilled from failure, perhaps you should also take a look.
Waiting is Failure
I've been planning to start a YouTube channel for quite some time now. But in reality, I'm facing some points that need to be addressed. I know if I continue to 'nurture' it for so long, it will surely fail when launched.
Because I've waited for the perfect opportunity hundreds of times in my life. And I know I've never succeeded with that mindset.
Hoping everything won't be too late...
I'm telling you this to let you know that I, like you, am not perfect, and need to strive harder for my life.
Failure is the mother of success: The Winner?
If you pay attention, there are always two winners in this life.
One strives to achieve life goals to win.
While the other seeks to defeat others to win.
Real fans see Barca lose, they rejoice. Barca fans see Real win, they curse.
Apple fans look at Samsung products, they criticize. Samsung fans see Apple decline, they gleefully celebrate.
Constantly criticizing, demeaning others to elevate oneself. In the past, I was also someone who sought victory in that way. Then one day, I realized I had defeated everyone, but why does my mentality resemble that of a LOSER, not a WINNER at all?
Until finding the truth above, everything changed. You too, choose the path of victory to always be the winner.
Be proactive to fail
Proactively fail. Only then will the mother of success manifest.
What I mean is, you should be proactive in your life. Choose actively whether to engage in that battle or not, instead of being forced into it.
If you're not proactive, you won't achieve anything. If you don't fail, you might still exist in this world normally. But, you will NEVER SUCCEED.
For example, young people often have the mentality of wanting to start a business, to be entrepreneurial. On the other hand, they want to have a stable job, receiving a monthly salary.
If you want to do business, you have to take risks, you will definitely fail. But if you're quick-witted, willing to learn, and focus 100% of your effort on it, your chances of success will be very high.
On the other hand, if you choose a stable but leisurely job for yourself. Surely you will passively feel the taste of failure when witnessing others surpassing you, ALL BETTER THAN YOURSELF.
Failure is just a bamboo fence, not a concrete wall
You should know that failure is always just temporary. It's only permanent when you can't overcome it.
I love soccer. If I had changed my mind that day, maybe I would have played soccer with you in junior high school. Maybe I would have had the chance to participate in school tournaments. Or maybe I would have met many good friends from soccer matches. Fortunately, yesterday, I put on my shoes and started practicing soccer again.
Failure is just a weak bamboo fence. Your mission is to break it down and overcome it, to look it in the eye and laugh, to conquer it.
And even if failure is as big as a concrete wall, so what? Grab a hammer and find a way to break it down. If you can't break it, don't forget to rent a bulldozer, it'll probably just take a little longer 🙂
Ultimately, failure is still essential for success.
Failure is the mother of success. Success may not come to the one who fails. But it will certainly never come to the one who dares to boast, 'I never fail.'
If you've never tasted the bitterness of failure, perhaps you also haven't experienced the sweet taste of success.
I hope your life will become more successful every day. And don't forget to wish me more success with Myself, my YouTube channel, in the future, and of course in life.
Meeting you again later,
Lai H.
