Disney's latest trailer for The Little Mermaid continues to be a hotly debated topic.
On March 13th (Vietnam time), the most recent trailer of The Little Mermaid was unveiled at the 95th Oscar ceremony. Following two previous teasers, Disney once again presents Ariel's adventurous story to audiences, yet it remains a subject of contention.
Official trailer of The Little Mermaid.
The trailer opens with Ariel rescuing Prince Eric from the depths, igniting her fascination with the mysterious human world and capturing her heart. The portrayal in this adaptation closely follows the beloved 1989 animated classic.
However, Ariel's appearance and depiction in this adaptation remain contentious. Some argue she looks unfamiliar compared to the animated version, now even more lackluster. Her upper body sometimes doesn't match the CGI tail, creating an odd impression. Additionally, the dreadlock-style hair fails to capture Ariel's graceful essence, instead drawing comparisons to Caribbean pirates.

Not stopping there, acting is also a noteworthy issue when Halle Bailey clearly shows limitations in expression, naturalness in some segments. Acting alongside many renowned seniors like Melissa McCarthy or Javier Bardem, Bailey hasn't truly matched up and completely falls behind. The only current asset of the 2000-born starlet is her strong and emotive singing voice.
Halle Bailey's acting performance is also receiving mediocre reviews.
Viewer Comments:
- So this mermaid turns out to be the daughter of Calypso, the witch who saved Jack Sparrow?
- Voting for the prince to fall for the neighboring princess.
- The prince isn't any better, both main characters in this film are flawed.
- Everyone might praise her beauty, but the movie should recreate Walt Disney's animated classic, with Ariel being a red-haired, fair-skinned mermaid. If it's not Ariel, then who cares about a mermaid of color?
- The color grading makes it look like a horror movie...
Apart from the lead actress Halle Bailey, the trailer for The Little Mermaid also introduces characters such as Ursula, King Triton, and Ariel's animal companions including Flounder the fish, Sebastian the crab, and Scuttle the seagull... The film is set to hit theaters on May 26, 2023.
