Despite Just Releasing Its Trailer, This Film Has Already Faced Harsh Criticism from Viewers
Hong Lou Meng is among the most anticipated Chinese films in the latter part of 2023, marking its return to the big screen after 46 years. However, upon releasing official images, the film immediately received numerous negative reactions from viewers due to the cast's stark deviation from the expected character depictions.
Trailer for the 2023 Hong Lou Meng Movie
Following the release of the first trailer, audiences were immensely disappointed as the characters' appearances, makeup, and costumes fell short. In previous adaptations of Hong Lou Meng, even those featuring child actors, the main characters, both male and female, were all visually appealing, if not stunning. However, in this film adaptation, not a single main character exudes the charisma of their respective roles.
Despite being just a trailer, the cast has shattered the established images of familiar names like Lam Dai Ngoc, Gia Bao Ngoc, Tiet Bao Thoa, making audiences feel like they're watching an entirely different script. Some comments suggest: 'Gia Bao Ngoc lacks the aura of a noble young man, Lam Dai Ngoc doesn't look like a literary female talent, Tiet Bao Thoa lacks the taste of a woman, Gia's mother looks like those square dancers in the square, Vuong Hi Phuong looks like a volunteer in the neighborhood, Gia Nguyen Xuan looks too young...'.

After watching the trailer, many viewers agree that Quan Hieu Dong, portraying Gia Nguyen Xuan, has the most attractive appearance, even though her costume and makeup are not much better. In fact, her face seems a bit youthful compared to the character. However, according to the cast list, Quan Hieu Dong only has very little screen time or even dull supporting roles. It seems that Quan Hieu Dong wants to carry the visual weight of this film, but she doesn't have the opportunity.
