Similarly to Outlook for Android, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and the unified Office apps also appear to offer options to switch between system themes or toggle between light and dark themes for the apps. This is a welcome addition, especially for consistency, as some apps, such as Office for Windows 10, already automatically adjust the theme based on system settings.
Recently, user Alessandro Paluzzi shared screenshots of the Word app (likely the beta version) with dark mode enabled. The settings interface provides options to toggle the system default mode, dark mode, and light mode. Notably, the text entry background in Word still displays a white page, although Paluzzi noted that this may change in the future. Meanwhile, the user interface elements, ribbon toolbar, and overall settings have been themed dark. Previously, OneDrive, Edge, Outlook, OneNote, and Remote Desktop have all received this feature.
Support for dark mode in productivity apps on Android has been long planned. The company initially announced bringing dark mode to Microsoft 365 services across platforms in 2019, and since then, the rollout of theme options has been gradual. Most recently, the company introduced dark mode to OneDrive on the web.
Currently, there is no information on when this feature will be available to all users. It's possible that changes will be introduced first to Office Insider users before they are rolled out to everyone.
