1. Steps for writing explanatory argumentative essays
a) Step 1: Understand the topic and find the main idea
The topic requires explaining what?
Sometimes the issue that needs explaining is stated directly (for example: explaining about 'humanity', explaining about 'humility',...) but there are also times when the topic indirectly presents the issue by using metaphors, sentences, proverbs, folk sayings, aphorisms, idioms, ..., for example: Our people have a folk saying: 'Traveling one day, learning one wisdom'. Explain the content of that folk saying. Before such topics, when determining the main issue (argument) that needs to be explained, pay attention to:
Cut the meaning of the image, sentence, proverb, idiom,... mentioned in the topic. That means explaining the words, original meaning, transferred meaning,... of the image, sentence... to understand their content from which the main issue needing explanation can be accurately determined.

I. ABOUT THE AUTHOR AND THE WORK.
1. Genre: The text My spring is also written in the form of personal essays, in the inspiration of someone far from home, reminiscing about the evocative spring in the North.
2. Author
Vu Bang (1913 - 1984) is a writer, journalist who was quite famous in Hanoi since before the August Revolution. After 1954, he moved to Saigon, both writing and working for the revolution. Despite being far away, Vu Bang always remembers Hanoi, his beloved homeland with countless gentle memories, profound impressions that cannot fade away. He wrote very evocative personal essays Thang gieng dreams of a young moon (published in the collection Thương nhớ mười hai) to express his longing, nostalgia, and longing for the unification of his country.

The essay topic requires explaining what? Cut the meaning of the statement to understand the issue needing explanation. Pay attention to explaining the meaning of the phrase “eternal shining light of intellect” to see how the speaker values the role of books.
Relate to reality (Textbooks, reference books,... you are using) and other opinions about the role of books in human life (re-read the essay Benefits of Reading Books in Lesson 19) to determine the direction of development in writing.
b) Outline:
– Explain the key words of the statement to clarify the point needing explanation: Books are the eternal shining light of human intellect. (explain both literal and figurative meanings).
– Explain the relationship between books and intellect.
+ Books are the embodiment of intellect. There can be no books without intellect.
+ Books help develop intellect.
– Why are books called the eternal shining light of human intellect? What if there were no books? Provide examples to affirm the “guiding” role of books.
– Explain the meaning of the statement through connections in reality and with other statements, for example: Books are mankind's great friend.
– Do you agree with the statement honoring the role of books? What are your thoughts on reading and choosing books, using books for studying?
