The company's goal is to develop this new feature in Firefox to allocate resources used by active tabs running in the background at a specific point in time.
According to Mozilla, this approach helps improve the overall browser performance because technically, Windows will provide foreground tabs with the necessary resources to display content on the loaded page.

According to information on TechDows, in a post on Bugzilla, Mozilla engineers stated that the new Process Priority Manager feature does not improve the overall browser performance.
'In Beta testing, we found that the Process Priority Manager has no impact on page load times, tab switching times, or user retention,' explained Mike Conley, a Mozilla engineer.
'However, we understand that reducing the priority of processes for tabs in the background allows the operating system to prioritize foreground tabs. At the very least, the new feature also helps in resource optimization.'
Notably, the new feature doesn't allocate resources for multimedia tabs. Mozilla's aim is for websites like YouTube to continue running in the background without interruptions. Therefore, multimedia background processes will be bypassed to ensure uninterrupted playback.
The Process Priority Manager feature is currently available and activated in the latest Firefox Nightly version. It's a part of Firefox 69, scheduled for release on September 3rd.
