Mozilla has introduced a new feature in the Nightly Build version of Firefox, allowing you to select the search engine you prefer when browsing the web in private mode. This way, you can customize search engines for both regular and private browsing modes.
Firefox will soon enable you to set up a custom search engine for Private Windows.
- Get the latest Firefox for Android
- Get the latest Firefox for iPhone
It seems like this feature drew inspiration from the Vivaldi browser, using DuckDuckGo as the default search engine for private mode. However, with Firefox, it's randomly disabled, and you'll need to make some tweaks in
We tried enabling this feature on Firefox Nightly version 71.0a1 (2019-10-03) (64-bit), and it worked quite reliably. If you want to experience this feature on Firefox Nightly, follow the steps below:
Activate the custom search tool on Firefox Nightly
1. Download and open the latest version of Firefox Nightly, then navigate to about:config.
2. In the search box that appears, sequentially paste the following commands and set their values.
browser.search.separatePrivateDefault.enabled
browser.search.separatePrivateDefault.ui.enabled
3. Now, select Options =>Search >Default Search Engine . From the drop-down list under 'choose the default search engine to use in Private Windows ', choose the search engine you want to use for private mode.
The browser will allow you to choose between Google, Bing, Amazon, DuckDuckGo, eBay, Twitter, and Wikipedia. You still have the option to use the same search engine for both modes if you check the option 'Use this search engine in Private Windows'.
Currently, Firefox Nightly has supported this feature. It's likely to be enabled by default in the next build of Firefox unless there are significant issues during deployment. Are you eagerly awaiting to use this Firefox feature? Let us know your thoughts by commenting below.
