Method 1: Using Registry Editor
Follow the steps below to fix Timeline malfunction on Windows 10 April 2018 Update using Registry Editor:
First, right-click on the Start button at the bottom-left corner of the Taskbar, or press Windows + X to open the WinX Menu, then select Settings to open the app. In the Settings window, find and click on the Privacy section.

If the above method is not applicable, the first step is to create a system restore point, then open Registry Editor by pressing Windows + R to open the Run dialog, then type Registry Editor into it and press Enter to open.
In the Registry Editor window, navigate to the following path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\System
Set the values in the Value data box for the following DWORD (32-bit) values to 1:
- EnableActivityFeed
- PublishUserActivities
- UploadUserActivities
If the DWORD values above do not exist, you can create these DWORDs yourself and set the value in the Value data box to 1.
To create the DWORD values, first right-click in the right pane, select New =>DWORD (32-bit) Value. Name each DWORD as above, then double-click on each DWORD and set the value in the Value data box to 1.
Please note that you need to sign in with your Microsoft account to proceed.
Method 2: Activate Nearby Sharing Feature
Some users have reported that after activating the Nearby Sharing feature, the Timeline feature works more smoothly.
To activate the Nearby Sharing feature, first open the Settings app =>System =>Shared experiences. In the Share across devices section, set I can share or receive from to Everyone nearby.
