According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Huu Hoang, Head of the Gastroenterology Department, Ho Chi Minh University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is a common bacterial infection in humans. It is estimated that over 70% of adults in Vietnam are infected with H. pylori. This bacterium is considered the main cause of inflammation, ulcers, and stomach cancer. Specifically, 90% of people with gastric inflammation have the presence of H. pylori bacteria.
Similarly, this rate accounts for 75-85% in gastrointestinal ulcers; in cases of complications such as perforation caused by gastrointestinal ulcers, the presence of H. pylori accounts for 80-95% of cases. Therefore, H. pylori eradication therapy in cases of inflammation and ulcers of the gastrointestinal tract is essential to prevent complications such as gastrointestinal bleeding, gastric perforation, and, more dangerously, gastric cancer.
Currently, H. pylori eradication therapy for gastritis and gastrointestinal ulcers faces many challenges, with a high risk of failure due to various reasons such as: Patients not adhering to the correct dosage, duration, and method of taking medication due to fear of antibiotic side effects or fear of taking too many medications. H. pylori bacteria developing resistance to antibiotics currently in use due to antibiotic misuse and overuse. Lastly, excessive gastric acid leading to antibiotic destruction or loss of efficacy, or liver metabolism reducing the effectiveness of acid secretion inhibitors.
Therefore, for gastritis and gastrointestinal ulcers, patients need to adhere to treatment, take medication at the correct dosage, quantity, and time. Avoid serious consequences from this condition.
