A fantasy anime premiered in Fall 2023 has surprisingly overtaken Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and secured the highest rating on MyAnimeList.
The anime adaptation of Frieren: Beyond Journey's End was released in September 2023 and since then, it has delivered 11 remarkable episodes to the audience. Despite still airing its first season, Frieren has gained enough popularity to pose serious competition to long-established anime.
Frieren: Beyond Journey's End has surpassed Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood to claim the top spot in the 'top airing anime' rankings on MyAnimeList. The series has taken the first position with a rating of 9.10, pushing Brotherhood down to second place with a rating of 8.89. For those unaware, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood has a large fan base and has maintained the top position on MyAnimeList for several years.
This isn't the first time an anime has forced Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood off the top spot on MyAnimeList. There have been other series that pushed this anime down to second place, but Brotherhood always reclaimed the first position. This time, newcomer Frieren: Beyond Journey's End challenges Brotherhood's strength, and fans are eagerly anticipating how long the new anime will maintain its position.

Frieren: Beyond the Journey's End follows the story of an immortal sorceress named Frieren, who has lived for many centuries. As she travels through different eras, she encounters various characters and situations, leading her to contemplate the essence of life and humanity. With time passing by, she witnesses everyone around her aging and her two old companions passing away. After some regretful incidents, she realizes she has made a mistake in taking everything for granted. Therefore, she decides to build new relationships with humans and stand by them.
The depth of the characters and emotionally rich storytelling have been the highlights of the series since its debut. Particularly, the high-quality animation and faithful adaptation of every detail from the manga have garnered widespread praise for the anime.
The anime has received mixed reactions from the fan community. While some fans are delighted to see their favorite series leading the pack, others express disappointment.
