The collapsed church in Hai Hau district (Nam Dinh) is gaining popularity among tourists. However, according to local residents, the area is overwhelmed with garbage, affecting the marine environment.
Trash Overflowing Near Nam Dinh Cathedral
Nam Dinh Cathedral is a unique destination, attracting both general tourists and backpackers. On June 6, in a travel forum on Facebook, a netizen expressed frustration about the lack of awareness among visitors who come to visit and check-in at this location.

The post was made by Mr. D.T.L., a local resident in Hai Hau district. He had previously planned to build homestays to accommodate tourists as the collapsed church became increasingly popular. However, according to his observation, the majority of tourists here lack awareness, impacting the landscape and the lives of local residents.
“Groups of people riding motorcycles lack manners, encroach on lanes and sidewalks, especially from Con to the church. There are many paint marks due to accidents. Having fun? Please do not climb onto boats or rafts on your own, especially female visitors, as the local people are very respectful of the sea,” Mr. L. reflected.
“Please refrain from littering recklessly, don't bring your vehicles down to the beach and rev the engines, the locals have prepared parking lots for you. Please be courteous when hiking, don't let the people in my hometown refer to you as wanderers,” he added.
Sharing with us, Mr. L. hopes everyone will join hands to protect the environment and preserve the scenery. In the Facebook post, he also emphasized that he only wants to offer general advice to tourists and hopes that those who have violated will change their actions.
The topic and photo received various opinions from members of the group. Many people supported Mr. L.'s post, acknowledging the contribution and calling on the community to enhance awareness and maintain cleanliness. Conversely, some opinions suggested that the garbage in the photo mainly comes from nearby eateries, not from tourists.
“The garbage is abundant on regular days, not just from hikers. It extends along the coastline, not just around the collapsed church. First and foremost, the awareness of the local residents there is still lacking. How many hikers does it take to produce that amount of trash?” a netizen expressed.

Instead of arguing, some have proposed solutions to the waste problem such as organizing clean-up campaigns, discussing with the nearby restaurant owners, calling for restrictions on littering, and installing more trash bins…
The issue of awareness among tourists in general and hikers in particular is always a hot topic, attracting public attention. Although many have recognized and made adjustments, a significant portion still litter recklessly, damaging tourist attractions, causing noise, disorder, and creating a negative perception within the community.
