Who is Egeria?
In the chronicles of Genshin Impact: Aquatic Deity Egeria
As known from previous Genshin Impact storylines, Egeria was the predecessor Aquatic Deity, overseeing Fontaine for an extended period before sacrificing herself and passing the torch to Furina. She was created by the First Archon to replace the Water Dragon's governance over all of Teyvat's waters, by receiving a hidden shard containing the Water Dragon's power. She is described as a being 'crafted by a god of humans, yet material and essence are original to this world, containing no elements from the outside'.
Moreover, Egeria was born from the desires of the people of Teyvat: 'Humans desire judgment for the sense of guilt, humans desire and crave punishment... Humans always want a deity.' Thus, it's easy to see that Egeria is an ancient deity, emerging after the conflict between the First Archon and the indigenous dragon gods ceased.

Perhaps many years passed, and Egeria continued to reign in the high seas, sheltering the people of small tribes residing on the islands, without conquest or domination. We know little about this period, except that she was referred to by various titles such as 'the ruler of rivers and seas' or 'the queen of water'.
It wasn't until Remus appeared with the golden ship Fortuna that life for the high seas populace truly changed – Remus gathered all its inhabitants under his rule, aspiring to create a perpetually prosperous nation. Mytour has previously detailed the formation and development of this nation, as well as its outcome, in earlier Genshin Impact storylines.
When Remus passed away and the ancient kingdom of Remuria fell due to Boethius's betrayal, Egeria stepped forward to lead the surviving seafarers. She established the nation of Fontaine, enacted new laws, and governed it to restore wealth to humanity. Yet, deep within her heart, Egeria knew that this nation would eventually fall like Remuria.- Primitive Humans and the Ancient Realm of Remuria (Part 1)

Egeria and the Oceanids
At some point in her enduring life, Egeria gave birth to the Water Spirits known as Oceanids with her initial tears, and thus all Oceanids came into existence. Entrusted with the task of understanding the differences between species and loving all, the Oceanids dispersed across the continent of Teyvat, carrying Egeria's compassion with them.

As the influence of the Abyss seeped into every nook and cranny of Teyvat during the calamity, Egeria alongside Rukkhadevata were the deities who rose to thwart it at the Tunigi Abyss. Despite being a formidable deity, Egeria couldn't withstand the might of the Abyss and sacrificed her life there. Her physical form transformed into the pristine and pure Amrita waters, from which Rukkhadevata fashioned the majestic Harvisptokhm tree. Her essence was also preserved by Rukkhadevata within the colossal lotus flower, Gaokerena.
While Rukkhadevata and Egeria couldn't completely expel the Abyss, the power of Harvisptokhm was sufficient to impede its progress. It also absorbed the pollutants created by the Abyss around it, thwarting the spread of this malevolent force across the continent of Teyvat for many years. The Amrita waters also nurtured the Vourukasha coral reefs, bestowing life upon a place that was supposed to be nothing but death.

With Fontaine now overseen by a new Water Deity, Focalors, the passing of Egeria had a profound impact on the Oceanids. They sought the Tunigi Abyss hoping to find Egeria's demise to be a misconception, but all they encountered was Harvisptokhm – not what the Oceanids wished to see. Since that time, no Water Spirits could emerge from Fontaine's waters, with the majority perishing while the few survivors grew bitter and resentful. They also refused to acknowledge Focalors, clinging only to the dreams of yesteryears, as once revealed by Endora.
Fortunately, this doesn't imply Egeria has entirely vanished. You may still hear Egeria's voice in the Farewell Party trailer, stating, 'Original sin is the fairest, all are submerged. Enjoy the final feast, for those guilty, the stage curtain is about to fall.' It's believed to be the source of the prophecy 'all of Fontaine's people will vanish, leaving Focalors alone on the golden throne' we've long heard.
