The Tragic Tale of Elynas
Approximately 500 years ago, sometime after the siege of Poisson town and the orphaning of two children, Jakob and Rene, another tragedy befell the people of Fontaine. Elynas suddenly appeared, unwittingly sowing chaos despite its gentle nature. The entire nation of Fontaine mobilized to find a way to eliminate Elynas.

Among those who joined this war were the Water Spirit Lyris and Mrs. Basil, the heads of the Narzissenkreuz Institute beloved by the children. They promised the youngsters that they would return when the war ended, on the condition that they refrain from quarreling and fighting. Mrs. Basil also left a feather on Jakob's hat, instructing him to cherish it carefully.
But fate often defies mortal wishes. Basil sacrificed herself in the pursuit of Elynas, while Lyris exhausted all her strength and reverted to a childlike form, her intellect also weakened. Even the Narzissenkreuz Institute ceased to exist as rising waters engulfed vast areas of Fontaine, including the children's communal home. The headmaster returned to the Narzissenkreuz Institute and stayed there.

According to Basil's solemn words, Emmanuel took in Alain and Mary-Ann, while Karl cared for Jakob and Rene. Emmanuel, once the hero of children's games, the righteous warrior of the Shimmering Throng in days past, now retired and drowned in spirits after the siege of Poisson, while Karl became an adventurer and set off for Sumeru to explore the desert. Both Jakob and Rene followed Karl, and the two children were quickly overwhelmed by the potential that the Abyssal Power could unleash.

In the land of Sumeru, Jakob and Rene quickly absorbed new knowledge about the Abyssal Power and the technology once used by the Khaenri'ahns. However, the harsh desert life left Jakob severely ill, on the brink of death. In desperation, Rene decided to use what he had learned about the Abyssal Power to cure Jakob. Rene succeeded, turning Jakob into a supernatural being, with immense power and no need for sustenance.
But that was not Rene's greatest achievement in his lifetime. The brilliant scientist's brain quickly found the 'World Formula' - or the 'formula of the world,' calculations capable of predicting the future. From his calculations, Rene realized that the future would be another tragedy: Fontaine would be submerged again, and this time, no one would survive. With the determination to change the fate of their homeland, Rene and Jakob returned to Fontaine.

While Rene and Jakob wandered the deserts of Sumeru, Alain and Mary-Ann followed Emmanuel to join the Shimmering Throng as operatives. Alain also enrolled in the Academy of Natural Philosophy to pursue research on artificial intelligence and control of destructive reactions to generate energy. Alain's research was assisted by Carter Scherbius, an assistant plagued by a mysterious illness.

Upon Jakob and Rene's return to Fontaine, the four friends reunited. Alain invited Jakob and Rene to join his research and received their enthusiastic agreement. Rene restarted his research on the Abyssal Power using the resources of the Academy of Natural Philosophy, discovering that the ancient Remuria civilization also had a similar 'World Formula.' Meanwhile, Alain made a significant breakthrough in artificial intelligence by creating a clever robotic dog named Seymour, who became Mary-Ann's 'butler,' and you may have encountered him.
Rene's new discoveries left the scientist stunned. According to the results from the World Formula, the world operates in cycles, and new civilizations will emerge as the world is destroyed. However, Teyvat will be the final cycle, and when this world collapses, no civilization will emerge again. The destruction will be total and thorough, leaving no chance for sentient beings.
