Gentle Floating Market Experience on Tam Giang
When the land and sky are still sleeping, the small boats of fishermen and traders gather under the glow of lights from eight directions to trade fish and shrimp. In a blink of an eye, hundreds of boats draw near, their lights forming bright clusters amidst the calm, rolling waves.
Called the Ngư Mỹ Thạnh floating market, it's not as bustling and diverse as the floating markets in the southwestern region of Vietnam. Sellers here are fishermen who cast their nets on Tam Giang waters. They navigate their boats through the waves, venturing to the middle of the waters to fish from early evening until about 3 a.m. the next day. They then return to the market to sell fresh catches of fish and shrimp. Besides locals, buyers include seafood traders. Everyone at the market knows each other, recognizing names, hometowns, and ages, creating a market always filled with laughter.
Traders swiftly purchase shrimp and fish to prepare for the morning market sessions in district and city markets in Huế. Fishermen quickly sell their freshly caught products to organize their fishing gear for the journey back home. With earnings from selling fish, they signal nearby convenience boats to buy rice, cooking oil, fish sauce, MSG, and other items to serve their family's daily needs. Their lives revolve simply and modestly from one day to the next on the waves.
