Characters in Westward Journey VNG: Epic Turmoil in the Three Realms are divided into 4 factions – Saints, Immortals, Enlightened, and Demons. Each faction brings unique strengths, making strategic planning exceptionally captivating.
In a tactical card-based game, coordinating the strength of different faction groups is a crucial factor. Westward Journey VNG has successfully crafted an intricate network of interactions among sources of power and the characteristics of elements or factions, presenting a foundation for diverse tactical arrangements – a challenging feat indeed.
The core of this system lies in the division of factions. Characters in Westward Journey VNG are drawn from the classic Journey to the West storyline and organized into four faction groups: Celestial Realm, Holy Realm, Enlightened Realm, and Demon Realm. The traditional five-element system has been replaced, eliminating rigid constraints. Each faction now possesses unique strengths distributed evenly among characters in various aspects, allowing players to develop broader strategic tactics without being confined to a rigid elemental cycle.
Celestial Realm – Celestial Guardians defending the Three Realms
The Celestial Realm comprises characters from the Celestial Court under the rule of the Jade Emperor. Familiar faces include Yang Jian, Li Jing, Queen Mother of the West, and Thai Bach.

The strength of Celestial Realm lies in its ability to create shields (Guardians) and exploit the advantages it brings. Each character possesses specific skills related to Guardians, such as Queen Mother's ability to create a protective shield for the entire team. Yang Tian and Celestial Deity can unleash more powerful attacks when protected by a Guardian. Yue Lao can also buff team damage significantly when under the protection of a Guardian.
From this characteristic, we can observe that the Celestial Realm enjoys a portion of the defensive points from Guardians, while simultaneously scaling their power based on whether their allies are buffed by the shield or not. Of course, they can still fight and deal normal damage without the shield, but when they have it, their strength is multiplied many times over.
Holy Realm – The illuminating power that saves humanity
The Holy Realm consists of characters following the teachings of the Buddhas and saints, practicing enlightenment but not serving the Divine. Representative names for this faction include Tang Monk, Eight Precepts, Sun Wukong, Guan Yin, Pearl Master, and Buddha...

The power of the Holy Realm comes from continuous combo points. The sustained advantage of the Holy Realm lies in maintaining the exclusive combo point advantage calculated over the number of points. If the combo point value is high enough, a normal attack from a Holy Realm character can approximate the damage of a skill attack.
Guan Yin uses combo points to unleash wide-area skills, weakening enemies and depleting their combo points. If teammates continue to pump combo points for Guan Yin, enemies will be continuously kept in a weakened state. On the other hand, power-based characters like Sun Wukong can use combo points to increase their strength to a level of potential 'total annihilation,' instantly defeating enemies with just one blow.
Shadow Realm – Power arising from within death
The Shadow Realm group comprises characters associated with demons and the underworld. Some notable figures of this faction include Yama, Black Void Master, White Void Master, White Skeleton Spirit, and Mighty Hag...

The distinctive power of the Shadow Realm comes from controlling death. Characters in this faction have the peculiar ability to exploit various aspects of a teammate being knocked down. For instance, Black Void Master has skills that can imprison enemies strongly; by restraining the enemy's core, it weakens the opponent. However, even when knocked down, Black Void Master still maintains a buff advantage for allies.
Other characters, like White Skeleton Spirit, have the ability to summon a powerful substitute, the Skeleton General, filling the vacancy of a fallen teammate. This ensures that the team always has enough manpower to fight, even when some teammates have been defeated. Especially, Yama gains additional strength and healing points every time a warrior, whether ally or enemy, is defeated, making Yama more resilient as the battle approaches its end.
Demon Realm – The opposition to the divine
The Demon Realm is a faction consisting of surviving demons (not belonging to the underworld faction of the Shadow Realm). This faction directly confronts the Celestial Realm from novels to games. Iconic characters in this faction include Niu Devil King, Iron Fan Princess, Red Child, Gold Jia, Silver Jia, and Azure Bull...

In contrast to the Celestial Realm, the Demon Realm harnesses power around attacking through burn damage. The characters in this faction also have skills that capitalize on this characteristic. Two crucial figures, Niu Devil King and Red Child, both possess skills to ignite enemies right from the beginning of the battle, paving the way for other characters to unfold their strategies.
Most formidable is Golden Eagle Demon, a high DPS character with an additional 30% damage boost that targets a wounded enemy due to burn damage, making it exceptionally potent. Iron Fan Princess buffs damage for allies while using a three-fan attack against enemies, accompanied by an extended burn effect on the target.
Main Character – A unique force
Although players can choose a specific faction from the beginning of the game, the main character of Journey to the West VNG stands apart from the influences of the four factions and possesses unique privileges. Firstly, this character cannot be excluded from the team. It's a fixed character that must always be part of the lineup.

To compensate for this constraint, the main character of Journey to the West VNG has some exclusive privileges and features to boost individual strength. Initially, the faction is only temporary, as players can use the Powerful Charm item to freely choose any faction they desire. This flexibility is excellent for adjusting strategies and completely changing the main faction of the team.

Changing factions for the main character is convenient, but for other characters, it poses some challenges. Journey to the West VNG stipulates that characters not from the same faction when switching in and out of the lineup inherit only up to +4 strength. If higher, the excess will be converted into resources and refunded. This means you can freely change characters and factions during the newbie phase. However, as strength is invested to a certain level, replacing characters with different factions becomes more challenging.

Additionally, players can utilize the Divine Card for the main character. This feature transforms the main character into any other character in the game with calculated equivalent power. The transformation is 100% complete, granting all functions, skills, and interactions with other heroes as if the authentic character is in the lineup.

The power system in Journey to the West VNG has undergone innovation, breaking free from the old and rigid five-element cycle formula. Now, each faction possesses a unique power characteristic that, when coordinated, brings about superior efficiency. Moreover, the main character is a special element from the storyline to the gameplay. It can seamlessly integrate into any faction and has the ability to transform into any character as required by the strategy.
