Hangouts is soon to be replaced by Google Chat for Google Workspace users, prompting the tech giant to add additional status bar icons to help users easily differentiate between Google Chat and Spaces notifications.
Users can easily view notifications from Google Chat and Spaces
As of now, Google's Chat app and its competitor to Spaces, Slack, and Microsoft Teams, have all added chat bubbles. However, the drawback of these chat bubbles is that they make it difficult for users to determine whether the messages they receive are from colleagues or discussing something within the group chat.

However, with the latest Gmail update, Google has resolved this issue.
New status bar icons
As discovered by 9to5Google, Gmail for Android is now rolling out distinct icons for both Chat and Spaces notifications. Specifically, the new Chat notification icon is a standalone bubble with a border, while the new Spaces notification icon resembles 3 people standing together.

Also according to 9to5Google, these new status bar icons are currently being deployed on an Android device running Gmail version 2022.02.20. However, the tech giant Google will soon deploy the icons to more Android devices.
