With the rise of digital marketing and online services, constant email notifications and updates, as well as the surge in Gmail account registrations, users tend to delete such emails, moving them to the trash. Other nuisances like continuous spam emails are filtered by modern email apps. A new bug (discovered by AndroidPolice) in Gmail for Android is preventing users from permanently deleting content in the Trash or Spam folders.
It's unclear when this Gmail issue arose, whether it came through an app update or a server-side problem. Previously, users could delete all items in the Trash or Spam folders through the Empty trash now or Empty spam now option. With the emergence of the bug, that option seems to have disappeared.

Users wanting to delete multiple items can do so by selecting them and clicking the delete icon. Alternatively, items in the Trash folder will be automatically deleted after 30 days. However, deleting an email from the Spam folder will send it to Trash, requiring you to perform the spam email removal task twice.
Fortunately, there are a few simple solutions to fix this issue. Turning the phone sideways will bring back the missing option. Users can also open any email from those folders, navigate back to the folder, and the 2 options to delete emails will reappear. However, these actions need to be performed each time you reopen the app. The Gmail team has acknowledged the issue in a support forum post and added that engineers are working to resolve it.
