Users are reporting that their Gmail app for Android has automatically switched back to the light theme, and the option to enable Dark Mode is no longer available in the Settings menu. Although the complaints are mainly from Pixel device owners, some OnePlus users also appear to be affected.
Gmail's Dark Mode suddenly vanishes for some Android users
- Download Gmail for Android.
- Download Gmail for iPhone.
There have been several cases where users seemingly lost access to Dark Mode after installing the latest Gmail update (v2019.12.30.289507923) and couldn't regain this mode even after reverting to the previous version. For others, Gmail simply reverts to the light theme when they sign in to Gmail on their mobile devices.
Currently, it remains unclear why Google withdrew the Dark Mode from Gmail's Android app. This could be just a glitch in the recent Gmail update or Google might have identified an issue with this mode. We hope the company will provide updates and promptly release a bug-fixing patch.
