Google Chat launches 1 vs 1 Meet calls similar to classic Hangouts

Back in September, Google began experimenting with a new feature enabling users to initiate direct 1:1 Meet calls without the need for invitation links, much like the classic Hangouts. Excitingly, this feature is now available and being rolled out within Google Chat in Gmail.

From now on, when engaging in conversations within the Chat tab in the Gmail app, users will notice new buttons at the top right corner of the screen. Click these buttons to start audio or video calls directly on Google Meet instead of creating and sending invitation links as before.

According to Google, this new feature is part of the company's efforts to make calls and meetings occur more naturally.

Furthermore, now during ongoing calls, the screen will display participant names and call duration, along with a green banner at the top corner. Additionally, users will also see the Meet icon in the chat box, with missed calls marked in red.

Currently, the direct call feature in Google Meet is only available in 1:1 conversations within the Gmail app for Android and iOS, and will soon be rolled out for personal and Workspace accounts.
