Google Chat has long been an application exclusively for Workspace users. Google spent all of 2020 transitioning businesses from Hangouts to Chat and Meet. The company is now ready to provide Chat for all free users still using Google Hangouts, to officially retire this messaging and video calling app in the near future.
According to findings by Ron Amadeo at Ars Technica, some users will receive a welcome message 'Welcome to Google Chat' when opening the Google Chat app stating: 'Google Chat introduces new experiences and features not present in Hangouts. Since this is a Preview of the new Chat app, you may encounter some errors and certain issues.'
This Beta version allows you to access and find any contacts saved in Hangouts, although group chats are not yet available at this time. In terms of design, Google Chat is a simple messaging app. However, there are some features for businesses that free users will have access to, including the ability to quickly search and insert files from Google Drive and create Calendar meetings quickly.
Amadeo also points out that video calls entirely rely on Google Meet. Therefore, video call invites generate a link instead of starting the call immediately. Hopefully, Google Chat will be integrated into Gmail as a dedicated tab alongside Meet.
The Preview version of Google Chat for Hangouts users is still not widely deployed. Google states that the migration option will be available 'starting from the first half of 2021'. Conversations in Hangouts, contacts, and saved history will automatically be transferred to the new chat app.
