Until now, compatible Office files opened in Preview mode upon double-click, requiring users to manually switch to edit mode by clicking a dedicated button. The new update will be applied to all Google Drive users on the web, including those with Enterprise and Google Workspace (formerly GSuite) subscriptions. Google assures users they can still utilize preview mode by right-clicking a file and selecting Preview, or by pressing P on the keyboard while double-clicking a file.
In a recent blog post, Google emphasized the significance of automatic editing mode for Microsoft Office files as it enables users to make changes 'more efficiently.' Users can now directly edit, comment, and collaborate on Office files using the familiar interface of Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides, with changes automatically saved to the existing Office file format. The update applies to all types of Office files including docx, doc, ppt, pptx, xls, xlsx, and xlsm. However, password-protected files will not open directly in Office editing mode but will continue in preview mode. Google explains: 'If the Chrome extension 'Office Editing for Docs, Sheets & Slides' is installed, users will be redirected to the extension rather than Docs, Sheets, or Slides. It's similar to selecting Open with.'
Automatic editing mode for Microsoft Office files via Google Drive on the web has reached some users, and Google states that the rollout will be completed within 15 days. Last week, Google introduced a new feature allowing Google Drive admins to grant access to files such as Docs and Sheets directly from Gmail accounts.
Recently, Apple's video recording app Clips received numerous new features, notably including the addition of various aspect ratios along with HDR video recording mode.
