Duo has supported video calls with 8 participants since last May when Google doubled the maximum number of participants from 4 to 8. Thus, Google Duo now supports up to 12 participants in a group call compared to 8 for Houseparty, 32 for Apple's FaceTime, 50 for Skype and Messenger, and 100 for the free tier of Zoom.

A Google product manager tweeted on Friday: 'We are very grateful that Duo is helping users see their loved ones around the world. We recognize that group calling is particularly important right now. We have increased the limit from 8 to 12 people who can join a group call today. More innovations are coming in the future.'
While the changes are in effect, it remains unclear if they will revert once things return to normalcy. If you need to chat with even more people and it must be a Google service, you can utilize Hangouts Meet. Though primarily for G Suite business users, Google has recently increased the maximum participants to 250 for G Suite and G Suite for Education subscribers.
