You're likely well-acquainted with Google's Autofill feature. This feature helps you remember passwords, addresses, credit cards, and more, then fills them into forms on Android and Chrome without you having to do anything else. Now, it seems Autofill is bolstering security as Google starts experimenting with biometric support for it on Android.
Google experiments with biometric support for automatic form filling on Android
According to recent reports from XDA Developers, inactive Android code indicates biometric verification will soon be added to Google Autofill, requiring users to use fingerprint or face unlock to utilize this feature.
At present, anyone with access to your Android phone or Chrome web browser can use the personal information held by the Autofill feature. This allows them to log into websites, fill in forms with your information... This is why certain forms of lock screen security are vital on smartphones.
Security is paramount
This additional biometric security layer, if officially implemented, would make Google's autofill feature more closely resemble third-party password managers: most of these apps require fingerprint or face unlock before revealing your details.
Based on the initial code, it appears biometrics could be utilized for both payment and login information, with toggles provided for each option. You can locate this setting in Settings > System > Languages & input > Autofill service.
Perhaps if this feature is deployed, it will support the latest Face Unlock technology that Google recently introduced on the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL, both of which allow you to bypass the lock screen via facial recognition.
This code isn't evidence that security upgrades for Google Autofill are currently underway, but Google is sure to implement it sensibly. We can delve deeper into it and into Android 11 at the Google IO conference in May.
