Image illustration (source: Engadget)Google recently announced a completely new version of Chrome OS called Chrome OS Flex. This new Google operating system is designed to run on old PCs and Macs, even those up to a decade old.
Google is targeting businesses and schools with this new operating system. The company claims that Chrome OS Flex can be installed in just a few minutes. Google also states that Chrome OS Flex can run on devices up to 13 years old.
The announcement of Google's new operating system came a few years after acquiring Neverware, a company that produced Cloudready, a lightweight operating system for schools and businesses with many old PCs or Macs.
Google says that old machine systems can be revitalized by replacing Windows or macOS with Chrome OS Flex, a lightweight operating system that can run on weak hardware and remain stable for many years.
Image illustration (source: Android Authority)An interesting aspect of Chrome OS Flex is its similarity to Chrome OS. This means the new operating system will resemble the Chrome OS found on Chromebooks as both are built from the same codebase.
However, the availability of certain features may depend on the hardware. This means features like Google Assistant always-on and syncing with Android smartphones may not be available for all devices.
Chrome OS Flex is now available for early access, but Google has stated that the company has not conducted any large-scale testing yet. Google is only giving users the opportunity to test the new operating system and provide feedback before its market release.
