Earlier this month, Google announced they were rolling out incognito mode for the Google Maps app, and now it's officially available on Android devices. Android Police highlighted in a support page post yesterday that the deployment has been carried out seriously.
Google Maps for Android now comes with incognito mode
Although it may take a few days for everyone to experience this feature on Google Maps (iOS support is yet to be announced), if this mode has been updated on your app, you just need to follow these simple steps to activate it:
Open the Google Maps app, if you haven't already, download it
- Get Google Maps for Android
- Get Google Maps for iPhone
Click on your profile picture
Select 'Turn on Incognito mode'
This mode isn't always helpful as some features are disabled. Also, note that it won't stop all tracking. Your visited places won't be saved to history (if you've activated incognito mode), your searched addresses won't be saved to your account, and it also won't use your information for personalization. However, you may still be tracked by Internet service providers and other apps if you're using Google Assistant and other Google services.
Similar to incognito mode on Chrome, it's more useful for considering personalized suggestions rather than viewing it as a complete privacy protection tool, and a way to ensure that whatever you're searching for won't influence your future suggestions.
