Compass functionality was removed from Maps as part of what Google called an 'effort to declutter the navigation screen.' However, in an official blog post, Google confirmed that the compass feature is making a comeback to Google Maps on Android. It's puzzling that the compass remained available on the iOS version of Maps throughout its absence from the Android platform. This has left some Android users feeling that Google may be treating them unfairly.
You'll notice the compass appearing on the right side of the screen when you begin navigating to a destination. As before, the red arrow indicates the north direction, making it easier for you to orient yourself.
The 'new' compass tool is now rolling out to all global Android users of Google Maps who have installed version 10.62 or higher.
Just a few days ago, Google unveiled a range of new features for Google Maps in 2021, with many AI-based functionalities. By the end of this year, Maps will be capable of tasks like displaying air quality and weather forecasts at your destination, offering live views at select indoor locations such as shopping centers, transit stations, airports, and even suggesting fuel-efficient routes for users.
