Google officially releases Chrome 67
New API: Generic Sensor
The most significant change in Chrome 67 is the addition of the new Generic Sensor API. As its name suggests, this new API collects data from device sensors to public websites.
This new API is based on the W3C Generic Sensor standard. Engineers at Intel proposed this API, and they also have a website describing sensor APIs with downloadable code samples.
This API is primarily useful for mobile device users. In Chrome 67, websites can utilize Chrome's Generic Sensor API to access data from accelerometer, gyroscope, orientation, and motion sensors.
Another integrated API in Chrome 67 is the WebXR Device API. Developers can use this API to build augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) experiences on Chrome for VR headsets on mobile devices like Google Daydream View and Samsung Gear VR, as well as headsets on computers like Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and Windows Mixed Reality Headset.
Last but certainly not least, Chrome 67 users can now activate Chrome flags and test Chrome's new user interface.
Security and Privacy Related Changes
Similar to Chrome 66, Chrome 67 also includes numerous security-related changes. Google continues to roll out Strict Site Isolation feature for users across various platforms.
By utilizing the Strict Site Isolation feature, Google can mitigate the impacts of Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities. With the recent discoveries of Meltdown and Spectre variants last week, this feature will soon gain more user attention despite not being designed to handle CPU flaws.
Chrome 67 is also the first Chrome version to support the new passwordless authentication protocol WebAuthn. This protocol was announced last month, helping Mozilla surpass Google by integrating WebAuthn into the Firefox 60 release.
Finally, starting from Chrome 67, Google discontinues support for the HTTP-Based Public Key Pinning standard. To download the latest Chrome version and install it, visit here.
