HDR, or High Dynamic Range, displays a wider range of colors so users can see more detail in the darkest and brightest parts of the image on TV. Therefore, HDR-compatible TVs have more vivid, sharper images, with high contrast between the darkest and brightest parts, and a rich range of colors and shades between the two extremes. Currently, Google Play is adding HDR to movies so users can download movies with excellent image quality, providing a better experience.
Google Play adds HDR for movies
Buy HDR for movies on Google Play
Google Play's Movies and TV app has just added HDR features for movies. Although there are currently very few movies compatible with HDR, including Kong: Skull Island, Mad Max: Fury Road, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and Suicide Squad.
To make the most of Google Play's HDR service, all you need is a HDR-compatible 4K TV. If it's not a smart TV, you'll need to use Chromecast Ultra. You also need to be a resident of the United States or Canada as these are the only countries where this service is available.
Finally, the price. Each 4K HDR movie is priced at around $30 USD. With this price, users can use it to pay for nearly 3 months of Premium Netflix subscription including both HD and Ultra HD at the same time. Users can hope that the HDR price may decrease in the future.
Clearly, Google is playing catch-up here, as both Netflix and Amazon offer HDR-compatible content, and YouTube began supporting HDR videos at the end of 2016. At least Google has beaten Apple because iTunes does not offer 4K content, iTunes supports music playback, movie watching, and computer connection with iPhone.
If you're a subscriber in the US and Canada, have the right devices, and are willing to pay a high fee, you can start using Google Play's HDR service today.
