In iOS 14, Apple introduced the App Privacy label for apps in the App Store, designed to inform customers about the data an app will collect before they decide to install it. Google will follow Apple's lead by launching a similar feature on the Play Store, requiring developers to provide transparency about how apps are using data.
Google Play adds a Safety section to provide transparency for apps.
On the Android developers' blog, Google unveiled a new 'safety section' for the Play Store, aiming to 'help people understand the data an app collects or shares.'
For instance, developers will need to disclose the types of personal information their apps collect, such as users' names or emails, and whether the app collects information from the phone, such as the user's precise location, media files, or contacts. Apps will also need to explain how they use that information—for example, to enhance app functionality or for personalization purposes.
Update or download the latest Google Play here to experience this new feature:
In addition to the data an app collects or shares, Google states they will add new elements that specify whether:
- The app uses security methods such as data encryption or not;
- The app complies with Google's Family policies related to child safety or not;
- The app's safety section has been verified by an independent third party or not;
- The app requires data to function or allows users to choose to share data;
- The developer agrees to delete data when users uninstall the mentioned app or not.
Similar to Apple's App Privacy label, Android app developers also have to self-report information, and Google will introduce policies requiring developers to provide accurate information. If a developer violates this policy, Google will request corrections and may impose specific 'penalties'.

Google states that all Play Store apps will be required to provide such information starting from Q2 2022, but they want to announce it now to give developers ample time to prepare.
