Google's Android app no longer free for European smartphone manufacturers

Google has announced changes to the usage of its Android app for smartphone and tablet manufacturers in Europe in response to a 5 billion USD fine from the European Union (EU). In the future, EU manufacturers will be required to pay Google a licensing fee to install Google's mobile apps on their devices.

In July of this year, the European Commission accused Google of violating EU antitrust rules, alleging that they compelled EU manufacturers to pre-install Google (Google Search) and accompanying apps on mobile devices, paying manufacturers to make Google the exclusive search tool and impeding the development of competing mobile software. As part of the ruling, Google was instructed to cease this behavior.
