This change has been in progress for several years, and Google says that 70% of websites displayed in search results have adopted the Mobile First Index algorithm. From now until September, Google will continue to transition websites to the Mobile First Index as the system recognizes they are ready.
Google began experimenting with the Mobile First Index to rank websites based on their mobile version in 2016, and the company started transitioning websites to the Mobile First Index in 2018. By 2019, Google had indexed all new website domains as Mobile-first by default. Therefore, what is about to happen this year is a natural progression. Alongside this, Google search is also likely to undergo many changes, so it's important to update your Google search techniques regularly.
