The initial preview of Android 12 for developers introduces significant changes to the user experience. As previously leaked, notifications are undergoing a redesign. This means they are now more user-friendly, packed with additional features, and have a modern touch. Above all, Google is revamping Animation effects and transitions in the user interface, making them smoother.
Navigation undergoes a slight shift in Immersive Mode. When watching a video or engaged in full-screen activities, Google states that with the new changes, users won't need to swipe multiple times to return to the main screen or navigate on their devices.
Additionally, there are numerous enhancements in both image and sound. First, Google will add support for the AV1 (AVIF) image format, offering higher quality than JPEG without significant file size changes. Android 12 is also making strides in Multi-channel Audio, with support for MPEG-H with Mixer (audio mixer), Resampler (audio sampling), and effects optimized for up to 24 channels.
Furthermore, Android 12 aims to excel in the seamless transfer of various content types between applications thanks to a new API. This allows for easier cutting and pasting or dragging and dropping of various content types, including images, videos, and files.
Google indicates that the company is actively working on updating Android through the Play Store as they continue to combat fragmentation in the ecosystem. With Android 12, the Android Runtime module can be updated through the Play Store, providing potential performance improvements for applications without requiring a system update.
Lastly, the introduction of a beta version of Android TV is announced. Google suggests that it's now time for developers to optimize for large-screen devices. For phones, the Developer Preview is available for Pixel 3/3 XL, Pixel 3a/3a XL, Pixel 4/4 XL, Pixel 4a/4a 5G, or Pixel 5. Currently, this version is only for developers, and the Public Beta version will be launched in the future. Google anticipates the stable version of Android 12 to be completed by August.
