Earlier this year, Google introduced a new Kids tab on Google Play Store, providing an easy way for parents to discover content and apps suitable for children. Now, the company is investing further in delivering child-friendly experiences through Kids Space, a new feature for Android tablets, initially available on select Lenovo tablets like the recently launched Tab M10 HD Gen 2.
Google unveils Kids Space mode for Android tablets
Built upon child-friendly content in the Kids section of the Play Store, along with video content from YouTube Kids, Kids Space on Android tablets is developed to offer personalized content for children, whether for entertainment or education. When setting up a tablet for the first time, parents need to create a Google account for the child, and then the child can choose 3 favorites to receive daily suggested content on the home screen. Children can also create logos, avatars, and profile pictures for themselves in Kids Space.
In addition to the home screen, where daily suggestions for various types of content are displayed, there are 4 main tabs in Kids Space including Play, Read, Watch, and Make. Play is where children can find games specifically for kids from the Kids section of the Play Store; Read provides access to children's books that Google says they have partnered with leading publishers to bring 400 free books in the US; Watch and Make both offer content from YouTube Kids, where Watch includes more real-life content, while Make provides videos encouraging children to engage in activities beyond using mobile devices.
Although Kids Space debuted first on Lenovo tablets, Google assures that this mode will soon be rolled out to other Android tablets in the future. An important limitation of Kids Space is that Google Assistant does not support this mode.
