Greek Homes Fortified Against Pirates
The island of Ikaria (Greece) is renowned for its inhabitants' healthy lifestyle and longevity, making it a popular tourist destination for its pristine natural landscapes and azure beaches.

However, centuries ago, this island was a prime target for Aegean pirates who considered it their homeland. To fend off pirate raids, locals began building houses with special designs.
Eleni Mazari, an island resident, shared with BBC: “These are the kind of homes not many people think of when mentioning Greece. These houses were built by the people of Ikaria to remain unseen. To achieve this, they had to retreat and settle in deep mountainous regions.”

Stone-built, snug, and lacking in modern conveniences, the homes of Ikaria (Greece) provide a secure refuge. To evade the attention of pirates, these homes typically consist of only one floor, nestled beneath towering cliffs. Local residents primarily operate during the night, minimizing light sources.

From a distance, the island appears uninhabited. Few notice these hidden abodes, seamlessly blending into the natural landscape.
