Greenwich Village has been a haven for artists from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century. It's a once-glorious historic district of New York City, also the capital of the free-spirited, adventurous, and dreamy individuals who reject the rigid ancient society and dream of a better future.
Greenwich Village, often simply referred to as 'the Village' by locals, is a predominantly residential neighborhood on the west side of Lower Manhattan in New York City, within the state of New York. Most families here are middle class. Over hundreds of years, Greenwich Village has become a historic district, attracting many tourists. Here, you can still feel somewhat the special romantic atmosphere of ancient times, more breathable and freer than other neighborhoods in New York City. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, this was the birthplace of the art movement known as the 'Beat Generation'.
A tourist's tour begins with a journey to admire the vaulted ceiling of Washington Square Park. Built in 1892, this stone vault was inspired by the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. Then enjoy the food on MacDougal Street. Formerly a row of bohemian coffee shops, the street has now become a food city with traditional cheap eats. Enjoy falafel, Indian rolls, or a slice of pizza...
This small village street (Hamlet) was narrow and winding. At the beginning of the 19th century, when the New York State Legislature adopted a plan for urbanization, much of Manhattan Island had few buildings, so the city plan for New York was widely planned, immediately. At that time, the houses in this village were already built, so people did not want to change anything. For that reason, when you visit here today, you will see that the houses here are very low and cute, the streets are narrow and winding like old village streets. However, when walking these streets, you will find it more breathable than other neighborhoods full of skyscrapers in modern New York City.
Take a walk along the small streets of the village to the west to learn about the neighborhood that still retains this ancient beauty. Here, the winding streets, diagonally opposite to the checkerboard squares throughout the city, will become a great stroll for you.
Today, Greenwich Village is a historic district with very expensive houses. Therefore, artists have moved elsewhere because they cannot afford to rent here. However, walking around here, you will still find somewhat the special romantic atmosphere of ancient times, more breathable and freer than other neighborhoods in New York City.
