Discover the indulgence of a steam shower for your bathroom. Surprisingly, much of the installation can be done on your own. Follow our comprehensive guide covering everything from preparing the space to finishing the shower walls.
Steps to Follow
Tip: When replacing a bathtub with a steam shower unit, ensure the bathtub is removed first. Similar to a refrigerator, the steam shower unit is a sealed unit that slides into place without needing silicone seams.
Tip: To prevent moisture buildup and potential mold growth in the room housing the steam shower unit, use mold-resistant drywall and ensure proper ventilation. A single exhaust fan is typically adequate for residential steam shower installations.
Ensure the steam shower unit's electrical supply is GFCI protected, given the electricity-water proximity. The line size depends on the generator size, ranging from 3000W to 6000W, requiring 240V, 40A or 30A for smaller ones. Professional electricians may be needed to avoid shocks.
Follow assembly instructions provided with your steam shower. Assembly time for a two-person unit is typically 2-4 hours with two people.
Connect both hot and cold water supplies to the steam shower unit. It needs both supplies for shower heads, jets, and steam generation. Connections are typically 1/2' flexible lines for easy access and servicing.
Connect the drain for the steam shower unit as well. The unit's drain connection is a 1.5-inch (3.8 cm) flexible hose, simplifying installation using existing drain locations within the unit's footprint.
Ensure the steam shower unit is level by adjusting its leveling legs. Usually, seven to ten legs can be adjusted individually to provide a stable and level base.
If necessary or preferred, complete the area around the steam shower unit to seamlessly integrate it with its surroundings. Any construction material used must be resistant to mold and suitable for wet environments.
Tips
- When installing items such as door handles, ensure that the set screws and fasteners are positioned on the outside of the steam shower rather than the inside.
