This guide will teach you how to create blank paper cartridges for .58 cal. black-powder muzzleloaders. Make sure to carefully read through the entire guide and examine all images before attempting to make the cartridge. And remember, never handle black powder or firearms without proper instruction and supervision from a qualified individual.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Constructing the Wooden Dowel

Start by cutting a 6' section from a 1/2' wooden dowel.

Using a 3/8' drill bit, create a cavity approximately 1/10' deep at one end of the dowel.

Mark a guideline 4 1/2' from the end with the cavity. This guideline will assist in positioning the paper correctly.
Crafting the Paper Trapezoid

Print the trapezoid template.

Follow the template to cut a trapezoid shape from blank newsprint or packaging paper.
Creating the Cartridge Roll

Position the paper flat, with the sharp angle facing forward and to the left. (Refer to the image for clarification.)

Align the wooden dowel on the paper, keeping the guideline on the right side of the paper, approximately 1/2' from the bottom.

Begin rolling the paper tightly around the dowel.
Twisting the Left Side

Keep the dowel inside the paper, with the guideline on the right side of the paper.

Securely twist the excess paper on the left edge.
Fold the twisted edge over itself. Press it into the indentation left by the wooden dowel by applying pressure on a flat surface.

Take out the dowel.
Adding Powder

Measure the appropriate amount of black powder.
Pour the black powder into the open end of the paper tube.
Sealing the Right Edge

Hold the paper above the black powder and twist it tightly to create a seal. This will leave a small section of paper above the twist.
Fold the paper tail down next to the cartridge. Your cartridge is now ready for use! Happy shooting!
Useful Tips
-
If you want to practice without explosives, you can use sugar or coffee grounds as substitutes for black powder (e.g., for school projects, drilling, or conserving your powder).
-
Some newspapers offer free paper butt-ends to non-profit organizations. If you're using them exclusively for a non-profit reenactment organization, you should be able to get some.
-
A black-powder speed-loader flask is highly recommended. To use it, cover the spout's mouth with your finger, turn the flask upside-down, and press the button. This will open a valve, allowing the spout to fill with black powder. Release the button to pour the powder into a paper tube.
Important Warnings
- Black powder is extremely explosive! Never use it near flames or sparks! Only use it with approved .58 caliber black-powder muzzleloaders. Never substitute anything else for black powder in this cartridge.
- Never pour black powder directly into a musket using a black-powder speed loader. If there are smoldering embers in the barrel, they could ignite the powder you're pouring and set off the entire flask in your hand.
