Using a nail stamper offers a simple method to turn basic polished nails into delightful pieces of nail art! Proper preparation is crucial for achieving smooth and uniform stamp application. Take the time to clean and prime your stamper head and stamping plate correctly to achieve the desired nail stamp results.
Steps
Clean Your Clear Gel Stamper
Gently remove the head of your new gel stamper from its cylinder using your fingers. The soft, clear gel stamper head should easily come out of the clear plastic cylinder with minimal effort. If necessary, use your fingernail to lift the edge of the stamper head, but take care not to damage it. Clear gel stampers are becoming increasingly popular because they allow you to see directly through the cylinder, facilitating precise stamping on your fingernail!
Cleanse the stamper head by washing away any oily residue with soap and water. Submerge the stamper head in a bowl of clean water mixed with a squirt of dish soap, then gently rub all surfaces of the stamper head with your fingers to ensure thorough cleaning.
Ensure all soap and residue are rinsed off thoroughly using clean water. You can either submerge the stamper head in a separate bowl of clean water and rub it with your fingers, or hold it under running water for 5-10 seconds.
Completely dry the stamper head by patting it with a lint-free towel. Lightly dab the stamper head with a cloth or paper towel to remove all surface moisture. Once dry, the stamper head is ready for use.
Preparing a Traditional Stamper
Gently buff the soft head of your new stamper with a nail buffer. Hold the stamper's cylinder and keep the stamper head in place while buffing it lightly with back-and-forth strokes. Avoid excessive buffing to prevent powdery residue.
Soak a cotton ball in pure acetone. Pour approximately a capful of 100% acetone into a small bowl, estimating the amount needed to fully saturate a single cotton ball. Place the cotton ball into the acetone and allow it to absorb as much liquid as possible.
Use the acetone-soaked cotton ball to cleanse the stamper head of oil and residue. Wipe away any powdery residue and excess oil with the cotton ball. The stamper is ready for use once the acetone evaporates, which occurs quickly.
Preparing the Stamper Plate
Clean the metal stamper plate using pure acetone. Pour approximately a capful of 100% acetone into a small bowl and soak a cotton ball with it. Use the saturated cotton ball to wipe down the plate, paying particular attention to any areas where dried polish may have accumulated. Allow the stamper plate to air dry for 30-60 seconds before using it.
Apply a generous amount of stamping polish to your selected pattern. Ensure that the stamping polish fills the etching of the desired stamp pattern and covers the flat surface surrounding it. You only need to apply polish to the specific pattern you intend to use at that moment. Stamping polish is recommended for optimal results, although other polishes, including gel polishes, can be experimented with. Thicker polishes that offer single-coat coverage typically work best.
Remove excess polish from the plate using a scraper or credit card. Hold the scraper at a 45-degree angle to the plate and swipe firmly across its surface to leave polish only in the etched design. Wipe the edge of the scraper and repeat if necessary before proceeding to load the stamper.
Application of Stamp
Roll the stamper head over the polish-filled design on the plate. Position the stamper head at a 45-degree angle to the plate and press it onto the design with a rolling motion. Avoid pressing straight down to prevent smudging.
Check the transferred pattern on the stamper head for accuracy. For clear gel stampers, view through the cylinder; for traditional stampers, inspect the transferred pattern directly. If satisfactory, proceed with stamping.
Press the stamp onto your nail using a rolling motion. Align the stamp over your nail and roll it gently to transfer the design. Admire your finished nail stamping art!
Preserve your nail stamp by applying a clear top coat layer. Allow the stamp to dry completely before adding the top coat. Once dried, you’re almost ready to flaunt your stamped nails—just a bit of quick cleanup left!
Clean the stamper head using packing tape or a sticky lint roller. Attach a strip of packing tape to a lint-free cloth, then press the stamper firmly onto it and peel away to remove nail polish residue. Alternatively, use a lint roller with tear-away strips of tape for effortless cleaning.
Remove remaining polish from the plate using a cotton ball soaked in acetone. After stamping, wipe off all polish residue on the stamping plate using the acetone-soaked cotton ball. Prevent polish from drying in the pattern etchings to ease cleanup.
