What is Wifi 5GHz?
Wifi 5GHz is a short-range home network system operating in the 5 gigahertz frequency band. This frequency band emerged in 1999 but gained popularity with the introduction of the 802.11n router in 2009. Most modern Wifi devices support the 5GHz band.
Wifi primarily uses two frequency bands: 2.4GHz and 5GHz. Among them, 2.4GHz is the default band on most devices. However, the main limitation of 2.4GHz Wifi is that internet connection speed slows down at specific times, especially when all wireless devices in your home are in use.
Wifi 5GHz offers more available channels and faster connection speeds, but it has a shorter range compared to 2.4GHz Wifi.
How to Activate 5GHz Wifi on Your Laptop
Check if Your Router Supports 5GHz Wifi
The simplest way to check if your router supports 5GHz Wifi is to examine the online technical specifications, read the manual, or log in to the router and inspect the settings in the Wifi section.
On older routers, manufacturers often combine both frequency bands and use a single network name (SSID) for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands. On newer devices, additional settings are added, including the option to rename the network to identify which device is connected to which network.
Check if Your Laptop Supports 5GHz Wifi
Before you begin, you need to check if your device supports 5GHz Wifi. To check if your laptop supports 5GHz Wifi, follow the steps below:
Step 1: Type cmd into the Search bar, right-click on the search results, and choose Run as Administrator.

Step 2: Enter the command below in the Command Prompt window to display Wifi network details:
netsh wlan show drivers
Step 3: In the Radio types supported section, relevant information will be displayed.
Step 3: Next, locate and expand the section Network adapters.
Step 4: Find and double-click on the Wireless network adapters entry as shown below:
Step 5: Access the Advanced section, then locate and click on Wireless Mode. Here, you will find details about your Wifi network similar to the ones above.
How to Enable and Connect to 5GHz Wifi on a Laptop
