1. What Do You Need to Prepare for Applying for a Chip Passport Online?
- To apply for a chip passport online, you need to prepare your chip-based ID card (CCCD) and clear, sharp photos of both sides of the ID card.
- First, you need to have a Public Service Portal account or you can register here.
- You'll need a 4x6 photo (see the 4x6 photo standards for passport issuance procedures here) and photos of pages 2-3 of your old passport, and the latest immigration entry/exit stamp page (if any).
- In case of a lost passport, you need to fill out a lost passport report (form TK05) issued with Circular No. 73/2021/TT-BCA dated June 29, 2021, by the Ministry of Public Security. (Download the form here, section Forms)
- Additionally, you need to have a phone number registered under your name.
2. Steps to Register for Chip Passport Online
Step 1: Access the Online Public Service Portal of the Ministry of Public Security
Log in to the Public Service account of the Ministry of Public Security HERE
Step 2: Choose Public Services
After successful login, select Submit Online Application, then type 'passport' into the search area.
Step 3: Choose Standard Passport Issuance within the country, then click Submit Application and the note will appear as in the picture below, continue to click Submit Application.
Proceed to submit the application as follows:
Step 4: Upload 4x6 portrait photos, front and back of the chip-embedded ID card as instructed.
Step 5: Next, complete personal information from sections 1 to 13.
For information from sections 1 to 8 (name, date of birth, permanent address, etc.), it will be automatically filled from the national population database so you just need to check if it's accurate or not.
Then proceed to fill in information from sections 10 - 13.
In Section 14, select Purpose of Passport Application, e.g.: Renewing Passport due to Expiry => Check the box for Passport with Electronic Chip.
Step 6: Select the passport collection method
There are no Sections 15 – 16, proceed to Section 17 and fill in the Receiving Agency => Choose the passport collection method, tick Collect in person or Collect via postal service.
Then fill in bank account information to receive refund in case of errors.
Regarding passport collection method:
Scenario 1: Collecting in person at the immigration office, you'll track the progress and pay attention to the appointment schedule for result retrieval on the Ministry of Public Security's e-portal.
Scenario 2: For postal collection, specify the address and recipient information. Then, make online fee payment when requested by the officer handling your application.
Step 7: Document preparation
Download available forms and provide all required documents (if any) as requested for application approval. For example, if renewing for the second time, upload a photo of the most recent standard passport under the latest Passport section...
=> Then confirm by pressing Agree and proceed.
After submitting the application, you're nearing completion of the online chip passport process. Now, remember to save your application number for future reference.
Step 8: Complete online fee payment
Once your application is complete and approved, you'll pay the fee as instructed via email from the Public Services Portal - Ministry of Public Security and SMS notifications.
After online fee payment through ibanking or e-wallet, you've completed the online chip passport process. You'll receive notification of passport return time, delivered to your doorstep via postal service, with only postage fees to be paid to the courier.
3. Some notes on applying for an online chip passport
Canceling previous applications
If you need to cancel a previous application due to errors, click on the Check Application Status section, enter your submitted application code, then click Application Details => Click Cancel Application after entering the reason for cancellation.
When the system notification indicates that the Application has been canceled, you may submit a new application.
Renewal of old passport
If your old passport hasn't expired yet, you'll need to renew it at the Immigration Department. In this case, you'll receive an email notification from the Public Services Portal - Ministry of Public Security, requesting additional documents.
