Guide to Traveling from Suvarnabhumi Airport to Downtown Bangkok

In Bangkok, there are two airports, Suvarnabhumi and Don Muang. Unlike the long-standing Don Muang, Suvarnabhumi is a recent addition, operational in recent years. Suvarnabhumi Airport was built to meet the increasing demands of Thailand's growing tourist population. Currently, almost all tourists in Thailand land at Suvarnabhumi Airport.

The distance from Suvarnabhumi Airport to downtown Bangkok is approximately 30km. Suvarnabhumi Airport has four above-ground floors and one underground floor. Arrivals are on the 2nd floor, and Departures are on the 4th floor. The 3rd floor features elegant restaurants and convenient shops, along with the airport police station.

On the 1st floor, you can catch a taxi or bus to downtown Bangkok. This floor also hosts the 'Magic Food Centre,' offering a variety of reasonably priced food. The basement is where you can board the Airport Rail Link to downtown Bangkok. Refer to the detailed transportation guide below.

Taxi
Taxis offer a convenient way to travel from Suvarnabhumi Airport to downtown Bangkok with 24/7 availability. Head to the taxi pick-up area on the 1st floor, where a modern automated system awaits. Simply press the button, and the machine will provide you with a receipt indicating the taxi queue number and your taxi's registration number. Once it's your turn, present the receipt and inform the driver of your destination.

Please note that you should have Thai Baht in small denominations when taking a taxi. Ensure the driver starts the meter when you board, and be aware of additional fees when starting the meter. Additionally, you'll need to pay tolls for highway bridges. In general, taxi fares are higher than the Airport Rail Link and bus, making it suitable for those with a flexible budget or traveling in a large group.

Ride-Hailing Services (Grab,…)
Similar to Vietnam, Grab is popular in Thailand, providing an easy way to catch a ride. They offer fixed prices for car rides to or from the airport directly through the app. Grab Car and Grab Taxi – available on the Grab app – include Standard and Premium options (Grab Car Plus) with prices ranging from 400 to 600 Baht (approximately 270,000 to 400,000 VND).

Many independent travelers appreciate these services for the drivers' accountability. You can identify them through the app, and trips are tracked via GPS, making it easy to spot any detours. If you book a Grab, the driver will pick you up on the 2nd floor, eliminating the need to wait in the taxi queue on the 1st floor.

Airport Rail Link
This train route is quite popular for its convenience and budget-friendly fare. The City Line operates from 06:02 with four trains per hour departing at 02, 17, 32, and 47 minutes past the hour until 00:02. From the airport to Phayathai Station, connecting to the elevated BTS line, the cost is only 45 Baht per person. To Makkasan Station, connecting to the MRT (subway), the fare is 35 Baht. The travel time is under 30 minutes.

Bus
Airport buses are an optimal choice for cost savings. The air-conditioned S1 airport bus runs from 6:00 to 20:00 daily, priced at 60 Baht per person. Catch the bus at Gate 7 on the 1st floor of the terminal building from Suvarnabhumi Airport to downtown Bangkok. The bus travels via expressways into the city along Rachadamnoern Road, Larm Luang Road, Phra Artit Road, and Phra Sumen Road. Note that the bus does not pass through Khao San Road but drops off passengers at the beginning of the street.
